Propaganda during War and Peace – Media Academy Training for Journalists

The Media Academy of the Communications Commission held a training seminar for journalists, which was led by psychologist Rusudan Gorgiladze. The seminar concerned the subject of wartime and peacetime propaganda, its dissemination methods and its harmful impact. The psychologist used historical examples to provide participants with knowledge and information about protecting the public from psychological and information warfare.

The trainer emphasised the special role and influence of propaganda during military activities. Participants also discussed examples of lies being used as a powerful propaganda tool in 20th and 21st centuries. Rusudan Gorgiladze explained the psychological aspects of dissemination of propaganda. Detailed discussion concerned the role of media in this process, as well as the professional moral factors affecting the work of a journalist. Media representatives obtained important information and learned about the ways to protect the public from lies and propaganda.

Rusudan Gorgiladze is a doctoral candidate in psychology at the University of Hildesheim, and held the position of Regional Director for Eastern Europe at the Harvard Alumni Association. She was also a research fellow at the Harvard University Weatherhead Center for International Affairs. Earlier, she was part of the state delegation working on EU-Georgia partnership and cooperation. She took part in negotiations between the Georgian and Ossetian sides both as a state representative and an NGO member. Between 2000 and 2004, she was the First Deputy Minister of Education of Georgia.
