Media Academy, Media School and Media Lab Activities in 2021

The 2021 annual report of the Communications Commission details the activities of the Media Academy, Media School and Media Lab, as well as the future plans of the Media Academy. Since 2021, the Academy has been headed by Shorena Shaverdashvili, who replaced Davit Kakabadze.
The Media School of the Media Academy continued to operate during the pandemic for the benefit of media managers, producers and journalists. The Media School, which was established in accordance with the Bavarian regulatory authority (BLM) model, began preparing practical teaching programmes by acquiring latest equipment and establishing a multifunctional editorial office where rookie journalists will learn how to work on different media platforms, be it radio, television, print or online media.
In 2021, the Media School started its second cycle of online masterclasses with video lectures by Davit Chkhikvishvili, who started working as an operator 32 years ago, covering numerous significant events, hundreds of protests and several wars across the world. The course consists of 6 masterclasses that include important topics such as covering wars and protests, news coverage techniques, maintaining safety norms in emergency situations, etc. The Media Academy of the Communications Commission began providing free online masterclasses in journalism in 2020, offering the opportunity to learn from successful professionals about the media, high-quality media product and everything else that a professional journalism may need. The first masterclass cycle included 30 lectures by four authors: journalist Eka Beridze, playwright Basa Janikashvili, journalist Tamta Sanikidze and photo reporter Davit Mdzinarishvili. The first cycle of online lectures was seen by more than half a million people. The online masterclasses are set to continue in the future.
Since its foundation, the Media School has trained around 150 media representatives in different fields. Even during the pandemic, the Media School held several certified courses and enhanced the qualifications of up to 50 media representatives. Practical trainings for journalists were held by photo journalist Davit Mdzinarashvili, risk management trainer Giorgi Kupatadze, security specialist Irakli Andronikashvili, psychologist Rusudan Gorgiladze, as well as journalist, playwright, GPB producer and head of Epoch Studio Ketevan Sadghobelashvili.
The media critique platform www.mediacritic.ge continued to actively operate in 2021, offering TV and online media critique. The aim of the platform is to provide the public with highly qualified analysis and help members of the media enhance their professional standards. The platform has been operating for more than two years in accordance with the editorial code developed together with professional journalists and media experts. The content is divided into reviews (short articles that are mainly related to violations found in daily news), analytical articles (analysing one or more media products) and blogs (analytical articles of a personal nature). 215 materials were published on the platform in 2021, including 149 materials written by permanent authors and 66 by guest authors. Materials posted on the Facebook page of Media Critic have been viewed more than 2,700,000 times since its launch. Over 300,000 users visited the platform in 2021, while the Facebook page had 5,800 additional subscribers.
The Media Lab of the Media Academy is a physical and virtual space for startuppers who are trying to create innovative solutions in the fields of digital media, telecommunications, collection and processing of mega data, artificial intelligence, gaming and virtual reality.
In 2021, the Media Lab held two editions of the startup contest Ideadrome. This is a rapid acceleration programme where startuppers compete against each other, undergo training, work with mentors and make the first steps towards the development of their own startup ideas. Ideadrome has a prize fund of GEL 10,000.
Apart from Ideadrome, the Media Lab also offers startuppers an acceleration and incubation programme that helps them improve their ideas, attract funding and take their products on the market. More than ten startups used the Media Lab acceleration in 2021. The Media Lab helped them turn their ideas into real products as quickly as possible and with lower expenses. More than 500 hours were allocated to intensive consultations with startuppers involved in the acceleration programme, which was full of novelties and challenges.
In 2021 the Media Lab held online trainings for more than 500 young people, teaching them about the methods and reasons for creating a startup. The Media Lab also held trainings in various institutes of higher education, including the Nasa Space App Challenge and Techstar Startup Week events.
The Media Lab constantly creates educational and informative articles for its own platform www.medialab.ge, through which it aims to enhance awareness about digital media, develop digital literacy and inform potential startuppers about the opportunities that exist for them locally and globally. In 2021, the www.medialab.ge platform published more than 120 articles that had over 200,000 views, while social media posts of the Medial Lab had 1.3 million views.
