Kakha Bekauri: “Unsubstantiated Criticism Directed at the Commission will not Prevent Enforcement of the Law”
While summarising the last 10 years of activities of the Communications Commission on Teleimedi, Chairman of the Communications Commission, Kakha Bekauri, spoke about the enforcement of the amendments to the Law on Broadcasting and explained that, for the effective implementation of the law, the Commission worked intensively and studied best international practices. According to Mr. Bekauri, the amendments to the broadcasting law are an equivalent of the British legislation. “We worked actively and gained very good experience from these cases. We also studied the best European practices, including those of the United Kingdom and its communications regulator Ofcom. The ComCom staff reviewed all significant cases related to similar types of content violations, and found that Ofcom has made numerous decisions in this regard. Therefore, I can assure you that our staff are fully prepared and competent to effectively enforce this law. My hope and belief is that it will only take a few months for the viewers to notice that fact-based reporting and the clear separation of fact from opinion will soon replace disinformation and fake news in the media space,” Kakha Bekauri noted.
In response to the host’s question about the current stage of enforcement of the law, Kakha Bekauri stated that the process began in April 2025, and that for the past nine months all the relevant departments and staff of the Communications Commission have been working to ensure that the law is enforced effectively and to a high standard.
