Goga Gulordava: “Problems in the Media Contribute to the Polarisation of Society”
According to the Chairman of the Communications Commission Goga Gulordava, the existing state policies guarantee media pluralism and diversity in the country, but significant challenges and problems remain in the media sector that cause particular harm to the viewers and contribute to the growing polarisation in society. He also noted that many international reports reflect these challenges.
“Over the years, a number of problems and challenges have accumulated. Unfortunately, today the media space is saturated with fake stories, biased news programmes, and distortions of facts. In many cases, it also fuels political, religious or other forms of polarisation, and spreads hate speech. Considering the scale of media influence on society, these issues have already gone beyond what could simply be called challenges within the media sector—they have spread into the society itself. It is clearly visible how media-driven influences contribute to social polarisation, how divided the society has become, and how expressing different opinions is increasingly perceived as unacceptable—something we all agree cannot continue in this way. Ultimately, these developments harm the viewers and the society as a whole. Therefore, regulation is aimed at protecting our society from these harmful influences,” Mr. Gulordava stated during an interview on Imedi TV.
