ComCom Representatives Take Part in WTDC-25

Member of the Communications Commission Ekaterine Imedadze, and Head of the International Relations Department Nino Grdzelishvili, took part in the World Telecommunication Development Conference (WTDC-25), organised by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the Ministry of Digital Development and Transport of Azerbaijan (Mincom). The main theme of the event was “Universal, meaningful and affordable connectivity for an inclusive and sustainable digital future.”

During the visit, ComCom representatives held working meetings with the Chair of WTDC-25, and representatives of the regulatory authorities of the United States, Romania, Jordan, Germany and France, as well as Cullen International and the Global System for Mobile Communications Association (GSMA), with whom they shared ComCom's efforts and progress in promoting an inclusive and sustainable digital ecosystem in Georgia. In addition, ComCom representatives received information about the best practices and new initiatives from fellow regulators, which will create new opportunities for institutional development and experience sharing in the future.

Working meetings were also held with the ITU Secretary-General, Doreen Bogdan-Martin, and the Director of the ITU Telecommunication Development Bureau (BDT), Cosmas Zavazava, who thanked the Georgian representatives for their active involvement in ITU initiatives and noted that Georgia is an important partner for ITU.

As part of the event, Ekaterine Imedadze took part in the ITU-D Network of Women (NoW) workshop, where female delegates discussed ways to strengthen the role of women in the telecom sector, promoting gender balance, and the importance of developing digital and leadership skills.

WTDC-25 also included ITU committee working meetings, which discussed organisational issues of ITU (budget, strategic plans) and outlined strategies for the development of information and communication technologies that will assist the ITU Telecommunication Development Sector (ITU-D) in planning its future activities.

The event discussed important issues such as the ways to promote global telecommunications and digital development; improving access to digital technologies for the world's population; outlining the obligations of regulators to address connectivity gaps; the trends, challenges and opportunities in telecommunications development in different regions of the world; promoting digital inclusion and achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

WTDC-25 is a platform that brings together representatives of governments, regulators, manufacturers, academia and civil society, and facilitates cooperation among stakeholders in the digital sector. The event is held every four years and aims to determine ITU's future priorities, strategies and action plan.
