ComCom Opens the Media Literacy Week with Educational Activities for Students

In order to raise awareness about the importance and need of media literacy, the Communications Commission conducted a simulation game for students at the Media Academy. During the game, one group of students took on the role of a media representative, another group played the part of a disseminator of fake news, and the third group represented an organisation fighting against disinformation. The simulation game, in which the students at Tbilisi State University, Business and Technology University, Sukhumi State University and National University of Georgia took part, was conducted by the Communications Commission as part of the Global Media and Information Literacy Week.

The activity was led by the ComCom Media Literacy Department representative Ani Gvetadze. Students had a specific theme, based on which the creators of disinformation had to present fake information in the most convincing manner possible, using different disinformation methods to reach a wide audience. Media representatives had to produce information that corresponded to the truth and would be more believable, while the counter-disinformation organisation had to come up with strategies and techniques that would help them tackle fake news.

The Communications Commission will organise the second Global Media and Information Literacy Week in Georgia on 24-28 October. The event takes place as part of the 2021 UN resolution that aims to raise public awareness about the importance of media literacy. As part of the Media Literacy Week, the Commission will hold various educational and awareness-raising events in cooperation with the Ministry of Education and Science, the Media Academy, as well as universities and schools. Numerous activities are planned in Tbilisi and other regions, involving school pupils, students, teachers, and parents.

All public schools in Georgia will mark the Media Literacy Day, which will include informational meetings with parents to discuss safe internet use by young people. Furthermore, as part of the Media Literacy Week, the Media Lab will hold discussions with experts on the subject of cyber security. The Global Media and Information Literacy Week will conclude with a summary conference.
