ComCom Member Takes Part in the “Journalists Matter Campaign” Meeting of the Council of Europe

Member of the Communications Commission, Ivane Makharadze, took part in the fourth meeting of national focal points of the “Journalists Matter Campaign” of the Council of Europe, held under the mandate of the Steering Committee on Media and Information Society (CDMSI), as well as at the conference titled “Defending the Truth: Comprehensive Approaches to Journalist Safety and Quality Journalism.”

The working meeting focused on the steps taken by the Council of Europe member states to enhance the safety of journalists, including national action plans and future initiatives. Participants exchanged information on recent developments, current challenges, and priorities related to journalist safety, and reviewed preventive legal approaches aligned with the standards of the Council of Europe.

Mr. Makharadze also took part in the conference which aimed to bring together representatives of government institutions, journalists, media regulators, civil society, as well as youth and international organisations, to discuss key issues such as: protecting ethical and trustworthy journalism and media actors; strengthening democratic resilience through the creation of a safe, reliable, and pluralistic information environment; early prevention of intimidation, disinformation-driven harassment, and political pressure on journalists; and enhancing institutional and societal resilience.

CDMSI is a committee operating under the Council of Europe, focusing on media freedom, pluralism, access to information, internet governance, and the protection of human rights in the digital environment. Georgia is represented on the CDMSI Steering Committee by ComCom member Ivane Makharadze.
