ComCom Media Literacy Olympiad Wins the European Festival “VOICES”
The Media Literacy Olympiad project of the Communications Commission won in the Media Literacy category at the European festival Voices – European Festival of Journalism and Media Freedom. The Commission became the first regulatory body to win in this category at the Voices Awards, while Georgia became the first non-EU country to achieve this success. Previous winning projects in the Media Literacy category came from France, Germany, Greece, Czech Republic, Italy, Sweden, Estonia, Belgium and Austria.
The festival aims to identify outstanding international projects and initiatives in journalism, media freedom and media literacy.
The Media Literacy category of the Voices Awards brings together initiatives that promote critical thinking, a healthy information ecosystem, and greater public engagement and awareness in the field of media literacy within a rapidly evolving media environment. Projects in this category were evaluated based on relevance, scale of impact, effectiveness, innovation, sustainability, ethical standards, and public interest criteria.
The jury panel consisted of leaders and experts from leading European organisations, affording the winning project strong international recognition.
The Media Literacy Olympiad of the Communications Commission is held annually within the framework of UNESCO’s Global Media and Information Literacy Week, with the support of the Ministry of Education, Science and Youth of Georgia. The contest aims to raise awareness about media literacy within the school community. As part of the contest, teams composed of teachers and students prepare projects on media literacy topics. The schools whose teams create the most creative and informative works are awarded a media literacy lab by the Commission, enabling all students at the school to produce high-quality media content.
The competition has already been held twice by ComCom, with four schools receiving high-tech prizes such as laptops, interactive whiteboards, microphones, LED lighting, mobile phone tripods, desks, and thematic banners. Notably, nearly 5,000 students and about 800 teachers from across the country have participated in the Media Literacy Olympiad.
The Voices Awards ceremony will take place on 11 March 2026 in Florence.
