ComCom Chairman Takes Part in the Opening of the 13th Conference of Electoral Administrations
Chairman of the Communications Commission Goga Gulordava joined senior representatives of state institutions in opening the 13th Conference of Electoral Administrations. In his opening remarks, Mr. Gulordava spoke about the role and responsibility of the media in society. He assessed Georgia’s media environment, highlighted the media pluralism achieved through state policy, and addressed the challenges facing today’s information ecosystem.
“Today, the media is one of the most important foundations for shaping public opinion, informing citizens, ensuring transparency in political processes, and strengthening democratic institutions. Therefore, the responsibility of the media and its impact on public life carry particular significance. The Georgian state has a firm will and determination to fully ensure freedom of speech and media pluralism in the country. This is evidenced by the diverse media environment and the multitude of broadcasters. However, along with media pluralism, the modern information space faces a number of significant challenges. The risks of disinformation, fake news, manipulative content, unverified information and deliberate influence on public opinion have also increased. Of particular concern are the confusion of facts and opinions, biased reporting, and the spread of hate speech and aggression, which contribute to the deep polarisation of the society and the growth of confrontation. Unfortunately, these trends are often manifested both in traditional media and on social networks, where the speed of information dissemination often comes at the expense of reliability and responsibility,” Mr. Gulordava stated.
The ComCom Chair also discussed the efforts of the Commission to promote media development, strengthen professional and ethical standards, and foster a fair, transparent and legally compliant media environment. He stressed that ComCom, as an independent state institution, bases its work on these principles and seeks to support a healthy media ecosystem. "In these challenging circumstances, cooperation between state agencies, independent regulatory institutions, electoral administrations and the media itself is important to ensure the right of citizens to receive accurate, verified and objective information – especially during the pre-election period, when each citizen must make an informed choice. The Commission contributes to the development of a healthy media environment and the establishment of professional and ethical standards. The Communications Commission will enforce the law and will continue to fulfil its duties unwaveringly. Accuracy, fairness, impartiality and high professional standards are the values on which modern media should stand, and whose protection is a necessary prerequisite for the sustainable development of a democratic society," the Chairman of the Commission stated.
