ComCom Chairman Goga Gulordava Meets with the ITU Secretary-General Doreen Bogdan-Martin

Chairman of the Communications Commission, Goga Gulordava, and ComCom member Ekaterine Imedadze held a working meeting with the Secretary-General of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), Doreen Bogdan-Martin, within the framework of the Mobile World Congress (MWC). Doreen Bogdan-Martin was elected Secretary-General of ITU in 2022 as the candidate of the United States.

During the meeting, the parties emphasised the importance of close cooperation between ComCom and ITU and discussed future prospects, particularly in the areas of digital transformation, modern regulatory approaches, and sharing the international best practices. Goga Gulordava noted that the Communications Commission will continue its proactive engagement in ITU initiatives and is also ready to host joint events and regional meetings in Georgia in the future.

The ITU Secretary-General thanked Mr. Gulordava for hosting the Digital Regulation Network (DRN) Board meeting in Georgia and for the Commission’s significant contribution to the network’s activities. During the meeting, the parties expressed their readiness to implement joint initiatives and projects, and discussed specific directions for future cooperation.

The International Telecommunication Union is a specialised agency of the United Nations responsible for information and communication technologies (ICT), whose mission is to promote international connectivity in communication networks. The organisation brings together 193 countries and around 900 companies, universities, and international or regional organisations. Georgia became a member of ITU in 1992, and since its establishment the Communications Commission has actively cooperated with the Union within the scope of its competence. Doreen Bogdan-Martin is the first woman Secretary-General in ITU’s 160-year history.

Within the framework of the Mobile World Congress (MWC), representatives of the Communications Commission took part in high-level events and discussions, and also held meetings with heads of fellow regulatory authorities, representatives of GSMA, and other international organisations.

The Mobile World Congress, held in Barcelona and organised by GSMA, is one of the largest international events in the telecommunications sector, aimed at discussing trends in the mobile market, strengthening cooperation among stakeholders, showcasing innovations, and presenting modern technological solutions.
