The Number of Fixed Internet Subscribers is Close to Reaching 1 Million

The number of fixed internet subscribers increased by 57,000 in 2020, and is close to reaching 1 million. Fixed internet subscribers currently number 998,000. Subscriber numbers continue to grow dynamically. During the last 3 years, the annual growth rate was 14% among individual subscribers. 950,000 families are now using fixed internet, meaning that internet penetration has increased, reaching 86%.
It is worth noting that only 45% of the population had internet access in 2013, and the number has since doubled. According to the data of International Telecommunication Union (ITU), Georgia is among the leaders in Europe in terms of fixed internet penetration.
One of the most significant and positive facts is that 84% of fixed internet subscribers are using fibre-optic technologies. Based on the analysis carried out by the FTTH Council, Georgia is ahead of 28 leading European countries with regards to fibre-optic internet use. Based on the organisation’s most recent report (2019), the average FTTH/FTTB fibre-optic broadband penetration rate in the 28 selected European countries was 43.3%, while in Georgia, the penetration rate was 67% by the end of 2019. The Communications Commission will inform the public about the results of FTTH Council’s 2020 report as soon as it is published.
Between 2016 and 2019, the annual growth rate in the use of fibre-optic technologies was 12.2% in EU countries, and twice higher (24%) in Georgia. The figure for the 2016-2020 period in Georgia was 15.6%.
