Web addresses now available via Georgian script
Web addresses now available via Georgian script – Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has officially authorized Georgia to write internet addresses using Georgian Alphabet and following ending - “გე“ , as for the Information Technology Development Center, it became the coordinator of inter-nationalized top-level domains associated with Georgia.
At this stage world’s few countries which are using Slavic-Cyrillic, Arabic, Indian, Chinese and Hebrew alphabets also use the non-Latin script in global networks while typing the domain names.
This novelty carries several important points for Georgian internet space. With the globalization process in the background, Georgian language internet addresses will increase the use of Georgian language in the internet space and will contribute to the preservation of its identity. Also, with the enforcement of Georgian language, more subscribers will be able to use internet, especially in the regions and villages, places, where population is less proficient in foreign languages; With the enforcement of Georgian language, residents will be able to freely use Georgian web sites, for example, even internet banking or educational and entertaining Georgian web-pages and more; An interesting innovation will be also for school students who do not speak foreign languages. In particular, they will be able to prepare such home work without help of their parents, that requires the use of internet, the students will be given the ability to explore and develop information on the web-space independently, which on the other hand will promote their abilities to increase work ethic and to improve self-development; most importantly, it will contribute to maintain and improve Georgian language and written language skills for foreign Georgian Diaspora and its future generations.
Starting January 20, 2016, the Information Technology Development Center has begun preliminary mirroring process in order to create domains reserve base for state necessity, trade mark containing or matching internet addresses currently available at “გე” zone. After 6 months from pre-registration process, the registration of “გე” zone domains becomes public and available for any legal or natural entity, for the residents of Georgia and for the residents of other countries as well, by means of online procedures.
In February 2005, Georgia became 100th governmental member of the Governmental Advisory Committee of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN). Country’s interests in the above-mentioned committee are represented by the Georgian National Communications Commission.
